Local SEO is the work of making your business appear when someone in a town you serve searches for your trade, in the Google map results and the ordinary results below them. For a BC business that covers several communities, it is mostly about geography: telling search engines, honestly and clearly, where you work and what you do in each place. If you want a deeper treatment of search on its own, BCSEO.ca covers it in more detail.
What it is and who it suits
Local SEO suits trades and service firms that work inside a defined area and want a lasting source of enquiries. It pays off most for urgent or high-value searches: plumbers, electricians, roofers, garage door companies, restoration firms and renovators. It also helps quieter local businesses, such as a bookkeeper in Nanaimo or a dog groomer in Penticton, that rely on nearby customers finding them.
It is a poor fit if you need booked jobs this week. In that case, pair it with Google Ads by region while rankings build.
What is included
Your Google Business Profile
We set the right primary and secondary categories, list each service, define your service area by the towns you really reach, add real job photos and keep hours accurate, including holiday hours. Most profiles we review are missing at least half of the available fields. Review requests are handled in the profile and reviews service.
Region and service pages
Your website gets one page per main service and one page per region or major town you serve. A Fraser Valley page talks about Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Mission jobs; a Comox Valley page talks about Courtenay and nearby communities. Each is written fresh. If your site cannot support this structure, we fix that first through our website service.
Consistent business details
Your business name, phone number and website must match everywhere they appear: directories, supplier dealer finders, trade association listings, the local chamber of commerce. Old numbers from a previous business line are a frequent and quiet cause of weak rankings.
Monthly content and fixes
Each month we add or improve pages based on what people actually search for in your regions, fix technical problems, and report what changed.
Timeline
| Month | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| 1 | Audit, profile clean-up, tracking set up, priority pages planned |
| 2–3 | Service and region pages published, directory details corrected |
| 3–6 | Rankings start moving for mid-competition searches; small-town results often sooner |
| 6–12 | Competitive Lower Mainland searches begin to move; content keeps compounding |
These are typical ranges, not promises. Competition, the age of your website and your review count all change the pace.
How we measure results
Rankings are a signal, not the goal. We track:
- Calls and texts from your profile and website, using call tracking that keeps your main number on your profile.
- Quote requests by region, so you can see whether the Okanagan pages are paying for themselves.
- Booked jobs, where you share them with us from your job-management system or a simple monthly list.
- Map visibility in each town, checked from several points across your service area.
You see the numbers in a plain monthly report and can call, text or email with questions about any of it.
Mistakes BC businesses make with local SEO
- Claiming the whole province. A service area of "British Columbia" tells Google nothing and tells buyers you may not show up. List the towns you reach in a working day.
- Stuffing the business name. "Smith Plumbing Vancouver Burnaby Surrey" breaks Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended.
- Copy-and-paste town pages. Twenty pages with only the town name changed are treated as low-value doorway pages. Fewer, genuinely local pages work better.
- Ignoring the Interior season. Search demand in Kamloops or Cranbrook peaks at different times from Vancouver. Content and promotions should follow local demand.
- Hiding licence details. Where Technical Safety BC licenses your trade, buyers increasingly look for that information before they call.

Frequently asked questions
How long does local SEO take in BC?
In busy Lower Mainland categories, expect three to six months before rankings move meaningfully. In smaller Interior and northern towns with fewer competitors, changes often show sooner.
Can I rank in Kelowna if my shop is in Vernon?
On the map, it is hard, because proximity to your verified location carries a lot of weight. In the regular search results, a genuinely useful Kelowna page on your website can rank, especially if you have real jobs and reviews there.
Should I open a second address to rank in another town?
Only if it is a real, staffed location. Google's guidelines do not allow virtual offices or mailbox addresses for business profiles, and suspensions are common.
Do you write the location pages?
Yes. Each page is written for that place, with the jobs you do there and the details a local buyer needs. We do not publish copies with the town name swapped.
