The Okanagan is BC's largest Interior market for trades and local services, and it is laid out like a corridor: a chain of communities along one valley, with Kelowna in the middle. Businesses here tend to start in one town, build a reputation, and then stretch north or south. Good marketing follows the same path, adding communities in the order your crews can serve them well.
We are a marketing and business consulting service working with Okanagan firms from our base in Vancouver. We do not install, repair or service anything.
The towns that make up the market
Kelowna is the anchor, with 144,576 residents in the 2021 Census, the largest Interior city in the province. Across the lake, West Kelowna had 36,078. Further north, Vernon counted 44,519 and the Shuswap centre of Salmon Arm 19,432; to the south, Penticton had 36,885. These are Statistics Canada municipal counts, and the surrounding rural areas add more customers on top.
What that means for marketing:
- Kelowna is competitive. Plenty of firms in every trade, and growing ad competition, though usually less than in the Lower Mainland.
- Vernon and Penticton are mid-sized markets where a strong local profile and a handful of recent reviews can put a business near the top.
- Smaller communities between them are often served from one of the three larger centres. Clear service-area pages tell buyers there that you will come.
- Salmon Arm and the Shuswap sit at the north end and can work as their own small market or as an extension of a Vernon business.
Seasonality: an Interior calendar
The Okanagan's heating season is longer and colder than the coast's, and its summers are a very different working environment from Vancouver's rainy winters. For marketing, that changes timing:
- Winter-prep work, from insulation and weatherstripping to snow-related services, gets searched earlier in autumn than on the coast.
- Spring starts for landscaping, irrigation, fencing and decking can arrive at a different time from the coast, so ads should switch on based on local demand, not a Vancouver schedule.
- Peak building and renovation months bring competition for skilled labour as well as customers, which is worth planning around if you are hiring.
Our BC seasonal calendar guide sets out how we time campaigns for the Interior.
The local business mix
The valley's economy supports renovators, home builders, landscapers, pool and spa companies, painters, electricians and plumbers, alongside a wide range of local service businesses: cleaners, movers, property managers for vacation and rental homes, and small professional offices. Growth means a steady flow of newcomers who do not yet have a trusted local company, and those buyers rely on search and reviews.
Energy-efficiency renovation programs are worth knowing if you do insulation, windows, doors or electrical upgrades. As of October 2026, the CleanBC Better Homes Home Renovation Rebate Program is listed for households that are not income-qualified, and the income-qualified Energy Savings Program changed its rules for invoices from July 6, 2026. Mention that programs exist and link to them; let customers confirm current amounts and eligibility with the administrator.
How we approach marketing in the Okanagan
- Own your home town first. Complete your profile, publish strong pages for your main services and build reviews where your shop is.
- Add communities along the corridor. One well-written page per town you genuinely serve, with local job examples and travel details.
- Run ads where the map cannot reach. If you are based in Vernon and want Kelowna work, a modest Kelowna campaign fills the gap while organic pages build.
- Time campaigns to Interior demand. We watch local search patterns and shift budgets as the season turns.
- Show credentials. For trades certified through SkilledTradesBC or licensed by Technical Safety BC, display those details where buyers can see them.
Results from our HVAC work, such as Roma Heating & Cooling reaching 400% organic traffic growth in 12 months, show what steady content can do in a growing market. See the results page, our local SEO service, or get in touch.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Kelowna business rank in Vernon and Penticton?
In the regular search results, yes, with genuinely useful pages for each town and real work there. On the map, proximity to your verified location limits how far one profile reaches, so ads or a real second location may be needed.
Is the Okanagan season the same as Vancouver's?
No. The Interior has colder, longer winters than the coast, so heating-related, snow and winter-prep demand starts earlier and lasts longer. Outdoor trades also see a different spring start.
Is West Kelowna a separate market from Kelowna?
For marketing, often yes. Buyers search by their own community name, and the lake crossing affects how far crews will travel for small jobs.
