Marketing trades and local businesses in the Thompson-Cariboo

Kamloops is the hub, and the smaller centres around it depend on businesses willing to travel. Marketing here should make your reach, schedule and minimums obvious.

The Thompson-Cariboo is a hub-and-spoke market. Kamloops holds most of the population and most of the competition, while Merritt, Williams Lake, Quesnel and the rural areas between them depend on businesses that are willing to drive. Successful marketing here does two jobs: it wins the Kamloops searches you can compete for, and it tells buyers in outlying communities exactly when and how you will reach them.

We advise and market; we do not install, repair or service anything. BCAgency.ca is a marketing and business consulting service.

The hub and the spokes

In the 2021 Census, Statistics Canada counted 97,902 residents in Kamloops, making it the second-largest Interior city after Kelowna. Merritt, to the south, had 7,051. Up Highway 97 in the Cariboo, Williams Lake had 10,947 and Quesnel 9,889.

The Province of BC treats Thompson/Okanagan and Cariboo as separate development regions. We group them only because so many service businesses work across both. Each town still gets its own page and, where it earns one, its own budget.

What the numbers mean in practice:

  • Kamloops has enough search volume to support paid campaigns in most trades, and enough competitors that reviews and response speed decide many jobs.
  • Merritt, Williams Lake and Quesnel each have a handful of local firms per trade. A business based in one of them can often reach the top of the map with a complete profile and steady reviews.
  • Rural properties and small communities need a clear signal that you travel, with honest information about trip charges or minimum job sizes.

Seasonality: long winters, compressed summers

Like the rest of the Interior, this region has a colder and longer heating season than the coast. Winter-related work starts earlier and lasts longer, and outdoor trades face a shorter window for exterior projects. That makes timing critical:

  • Begin autumn campaigns for winter-prep, snow and freeze-related services well before the first cold snap, not after it.
  • Plan spring campaigns for landscapers, fencing, decks and exterior painting to switch on with local conditions.
  • Expect summer to be the busiest season for building and renovation, which can strain crews; ads should ease off when your schedule fills.

The BC seasonal calendar guide explains how we set these dates.

The local business mix

The region's service economy includes contractors who handle residential, ranch and commercial work, along with property managers, cleaners, movers, equipment services and many small professional offices. In smaller centres, one business often covers several related services, such as a plumber who also does drainage, or a builder who handles renovations and decks. Websites should list each service clearly so customers searching for the specific job can find you.

For electrical and mechanical trades, SkilledTradesBC Skilled Trades Certification is now in effect for seven trades, including construction electricians, gasfitters and steamfitters/pipefitters. Showing certification and licence details on your website gives buyers a reason to trust a company they may not know. We link to regulators; we do not interpret the rules.

Homeowners with lower incomes may also be asking about free retrofits. As of October 2026, BC Hydro and FortisBC deliver the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program in BC, announced on June 29, 2026. Point customers to the program rather than promising eligibility.

How we approach marketing here

  1. Win Kamloops on specific jobs. Separate pages and ad groups for the services you most want, so you compete on searches you can win.
  2. Create route-day pages. If you visit Williams Lake or Merritt on certain days, say so. Buyers in smaller centres value predictability over speed.
  3. Keep the profile complete and current. Service area, holiday hours and photos from jobs in each town.
  4. Collect reviews from outlying customers. A review that mentions Quesnel helps you show up in Quesnel.
  5. Scale ads with capacity. Pause regional campaigns when your crews are booked out; restart when the schedule opens.

Results from our HVAC work, like CanroHeat.ca achieving 250% lead growth, show what structured local marketing can do. See the results page, our Google Ads by region service, or contact us.

Frequently asked questions

Should a Kamloops business advertise in Williams Lake?

Only if you schedule work there regularly. If you do, a dedicated page explaining when crews visit and how you handle urgent calls will convert far better than a general Kamloops page.

Are Williams Lake and Quesnel big enough for paid ads?

For urgent trades, a small campaign can pay. For most others, a complete profile, a local page and steady reviews do more for less money.

Why do you group the Thompson and the Cariboo together?

For marketing convenience only. They are separate official regions, but many businesses serve parts of both from one base, so we plan them side by side while keeping separate pages and budgets for each town.
