Marketing trades and local businesses in Northern BC

Northern BC has fewer competitors per trade and enormous distances. Visibility is often easier to win here, but buyers need clear answers about reach, scheduling and response times.

Northern BC is the part of the province where online visibility is easiest to win and hardest to fake. There are fewer businesses in each trade, so a well-built profile and a few useful pages can put a company near the top of local results. But the distances are vast, the winters are long, and buyers want to know before they call whether you will actually make the trip. Marketing here is about being findable and being clear.

BCAgency.ca provides marketing and business consulting to northern firms from Vancouver. We never install, repair or service anything.

The main centres

The Province of BC divides the north into several development regions, including North Coast, Nechako and Northeast. For marketing, we work with the centres where buyers concentrate. Statistics Canada counted these populations in the 2021 Census:

Community 2021 population Marketing role
Prince George 76,708 The northern hub, with the most competition and search volume
Fort St. John 21,465 Peace region centre with steady residential and commercial demand
Dawson Creek 12,323 Peace region town, often served together with Fort St. John
Prince Rupert 12,300 North Coast port city
Terrace 12,017 Northwest centre, frequently paired with nearby communities

Each of these is a separate market. A Prince George company appearing in Terrace search results means little if it cannot get a crew there within a reasonable time.

Seasonality and the long heating season

The north has the province's coldest and longest heating seasons. A 2023 Statistics Canada household survey put natural gas as the main heating energy for 42% of BC homes and electricity for 36%, and up north that heat runs for much of the year. For marketing, that means:

  • Winter-prep and freeze-related services are searched early and often, from insulation and windows to plumbing protection and snow work.
  • Emergency searches spike during cold snaps. Your profile hours, call answering and after-hours message need to be ready before the first deep freeze.
  • The outdoor season for exterior work is short and crowded, so landscaping, roofing and exterior renovation firms benefit from booking spring work early in the year.

Energy upgrade programs are relevant for insulation, window and electrical trades. As of October 2026, the CleanBC Energy Savings Program applies new requirements to invoices dated on or after July 6, 2026. Mention that programs exist and point buyers to them; do not promise eligibility.

Time zones in the Peace region

Fort St. John and Dawson Creek stay on Mountain Standard Time all year. In winter their clocks are an hour ahead of Vancouver; in summer they match. Ad schedules, profile hours and response promises should follow local time, or you risk paying for clicks after you have closed for the day.

The local business mix

Northern communities support a broad range of trades and service businesses, often owner-run and covering wide areas. Many firms provide both residential and commercial work, and some combine several services under one roof. Alongside plumbers, electricians, builders and roofers, there is demand for movers, cleaners, equipment and small-engine services, property maintenance and professional offices.

As elsewhere in BC, Technical Safety BC licenses gas and electrical contractors, and a visible licence number reassures buyers who are choosing between a local firm and one from out of town. We link to regulators; we do not give compliance advice.

How we approach marketing in the North

  1. Map your real reach. List the communities you serve, how often you visit outlying areas, and any travel charges. Clarity wins calls.
  2. Make the profile your storefront. In thin markets, a complete Google Business Profile with real photos and recent reviews often outperforms ads.
  3. Prepare for cold-snap spikes. Set call handling, after-hours messages and emergency pages before winter, not during it.
  4. Use small, targeted ads where they pay. Prince George and the Peace region can support modest campaigns for urgent jobs; smaller towns may not need them.
  5. Collect reviews from every community you serve. They tell buyers you really do come to their town.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth paying for Google Ads in Prince George?

For urgent, high-value jobs, often yes, and clicks typically cost less than in the Lower Mainland. For routine work, start with your profile, reviews and a few strong service pages.

Do Fort St. John and Dawson Creek keep the same time as Vancouver?

Not all year. The Peace region stays on Mountain Standard Time year-round, so in winter its clocks run an hour ahead of Vancouver. Ad schedules and profile hours should follow local time.

Can one company cover Terrace and Prince Rupert?

Many do. If you serve both, give each its own page with your scheduling details, and collect reviews from customers in both communities.
